How to Plan for Wedding Photography

A significant wedding planning challenge is knowing the difference between how long you think things will take and how long they actually take. The main photography session is usually planned between the ceremony and the reception. If not planned well, the photography session gets squeezed. Most brides plan an hour but fail to account for travel time for the entire wedding party, the extra time maneuvering in a long dress takes, and time for the wedding party to find their places and adjust their clothes and makeup. Before you know it, the planned hour is down to 15 minutes. Do not make this mistake! Before the wedding the bride and groom should go through the entire process, imagining it all. However long you think it will take, add more time. In inclement weather plan add even more time. Every person in the wedding party wants to look their best in the photos, so honor them by allowing time.

The other part of this equation is careful planning about what the wedding guests will do while waiting for the photography to be done. It shouldn't be a "waiting time", it should either be crystal clear or they should be directed to refreshments, places to sit, and hopefully some kind of entertainment while they wait. The guests are usually emotional after a wedding. They're still on a high. Plan for them so that they continue to enjoy themselves until you're ready. Most couples spend the bulk of their planning on the front end of the wedding, but the second half is equally important.
